Loaches are freshwater, benthic fish found throughout Eurasia and northern Africa. There are about 1249 known species of loaches in the world. They display a wide variety of morphologies, so it is difficult to characterize them as a whole. Most are small, narrow-bodied and with brown-to-black patterns along the dorsal surface and sides.
