The burbot is a freshwater fish that is closely related to the cusk and the common. Their geographic distribution ranges from Eurasia to Canada, Alaska, and northern United States.
These fish live in cold rivers, lakes, and reservoirs, but they may also be found in brackish environments during spawning.
Burbots looks like a cross between a catfish and an eel. They have an elongated body that is laterally compressed and a flattened head with a projection for each nostril.
Many populations have been threatened or extirpated.
