Fitzroy Island is a popular day trip from Cairns for both snorkelers and scuba divers. The rocky reefs surrounding the island are shallow, with an average depth of only 15 meters/50 feet. The island is great for beginner divers but does not offer anything spectacular to experienced divers.
Those that can venture into deeper water will be rewarded with a variety of hard and soft coral in a better state. Look for the colorful reef fish, stingrays, crabs, shrimps, and sea stars.
