Conshelf II, or Continental Shelf Station Two, is a former underwater “village” built by renowned conservationist Jacques Cousteau off Sha’ab Rumi, Sudan, in the Red Sea. The habitat featured a starfish-shaped house where the oceanauts lived, a submarine hangar that housed a very small submarine dubbed the “diving saucer,” and a “Deep Cabin.” The Starfish and hangar were placed at 10 meters (33 feet) from the surface while the cabin was found at about 30 meters (100 feet).

The wrecks of Conshelf II can be explored today from Sudan and Egypt. Despite that very little remains of the underwater village, diving the Conshelf II can be an amazing experience for fans of Jacques Cousteau’s work. Scuba divers can see the remains of shark cages, fish cages, the scooter shed, and the hangar. The remains are covered with coral growth, sponges, and crustaceans.

You can learn more about this sunken habitat from Cousteau’s 1964 documentary World Without Sun (Le monde sans soleil).
