Catalina Wreck

Punto de inmersión en
Improve

The Catalina wreck dive site is found off the coast of Biak Island in West Papua. The wreck is believed to be a WWII amphibious bomber. The Catalina is thought to have been shot down by the Japanese during WWII, but there’s no record of when or why it has sunk. It also shows no traces of enemy shelling, so it may have simply suffered engine problems that caused it to plunge into the sea.

The aircraft is still intact lying in calm and water less than 30 meters (100 feet) deep. The Catalina is 16 meters (52 feet) long and has a wingspan of 27 meters (89 feet). The wreck is covered in hard and soft corals home to a multitude of reef fish such as angelfish, damselfish, squirrelfish, lionfish, nudibranchs, and starfish.

Biak's weather is rather constant throughout the year, so diving is possible at any time of the year.
